private, non-profit organization. Compeer was
established in 1986 and matches trained volunteers
and at-risk individuals on a one-to-one basis in
supportive friendships. This consistent friendship gives
a sense of self assurance to the at-risk person and helps
to battle a mental illness, a developmental disability or
the isolation experienced by some elderly persons.
